Generators for Collection???

I recommend you get the generator and then do a mock run with 2-3 trusted people that have access to your house while you are away. This way you all go through the steps of how to set it up, where to safely locate it while running, how many extension cords you'll need and where they are stored, what filtration pumps, air pumps, and other items need to be plugged in. How to take it all down. That way you all go through it together. Then if you're ever away you have 2-3 people that all you have to do is get a message to, then odds are one will be available (with perhaps the right bribe) and everything will be fine and you won't have to worry while you are away.

A generator would not have helped you unless it had an auto start function to start up when th power cuts, this needs to then be integrated in to the house wiring safely. If not then you need to be there to start it and then disconnect when your power comes back on.

If you are relying on others to start it then add redundant heater and pump so that they do not need to plug or unplug any equipment, just fire up the generator already wired to the aquarium with its own equipment.

I believe some big pumps can cause issues with generators, can't remember why but something about the power wave on start up, you might be best off with a simple heater (protected) and an air pump to keep the filter and water aerated / moving until the power comes back in?
