Genetics questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it took them two years to do it maybe they got lucky, maybe not. plus how many breeding pairs did they have going at the same time?? i am just saying if u are going to really do this it could take awhile. if it is something u want to do then do it. hmmmmmm... if it where me i would start by getting a black beta and a white beta both with the tails u want on ur beta and see what happens. unless there is a betta that already has the half and half color characteristic u will have too just wait till u find what u want. and i would probably try to breed as many pairs as possible at any given time and do some black dad x white mom, and white dad x black mom. see what the offspring look like and go from there. pick the ones u like and keep breeding like that untill u get what u want. that is how it is done.

Yeah okay. I can only have two pairs going at once or 4 if I cleaned out ALL my tanks for just Betta's. WOuld need lots of 5 gallons though. SO I'll stick with 2 and see what I can do. Can't start for a few weeks/ months until I find the two Betta's I want. Right now I'm playing around with the first one. I want to try it though. I've also got an Angel project going right now. So I'm working with limited space. So it will take longer I'm sure but that's fine with me. Maybe I will get lucky? Probably not. Lol. I never am. Maybe I'll buy a contrast and just work with something easier for the time being. Lol. Like the double tail project.

Alright I learned the punnet square and some basic genetics for Bettas. In a spawn where both parents are heterogeneous (S,dt) the alleles are 25% S,S 50% S,dt and 25% Dt,Dt Genotype would be 50% homogenous and 50% heterogeneous and the Phenotype would be 75% single tail because Single tail is dominant and 25% Double tail. So out of 10 (There's probably more in there) 2 theoretically should be double tail having inherited both sets of recessive genes. The S, dt should show enhanced fins along their back (wider, longer, more in proportion to the ventral fin) and the S,S should have small fins on their back. What I would like to know is when, developmentally speaking, they start showing whether or not they're double tail or single tail and when they start developing into half moons. They're 9 days old now and are already showing some signs of fins on their backs and growing rapidly. They're about the size of week old guppy fry now and able to eat finly crushed flakes (though after being on a diet of copepods, micro worms, and naupli they aren't taking much of a shine to it.

If you go on youtube and type "betta fry" you can see videos of people's betta fry at various ages to get an idea of when you will see various traits start to appear.

Unfortunately it seems to vary with how well you keep the water and food... but I'm still trying to find someone that can give me an idea of when it's supposed to happen. Like the same time the other fins start to develop, are they hatched with the split...etc.
