My 30 gal will be empty fairly soon and I was thinking of doing a geo pair.
So my questions are:
Is this tank size appropriate?
If so I know that different varieties get different sizes so which would be best suited?
I like colour so some colourful ones would be good
AND finally tank mates?? if any

THANK YOU!

I'd stick to a pair/group of Gymnogeophagus in that sized tank.

The rams and apistos are really good looking fish for sure.
I have actually had no experience with cichlids...my dad has and he offers some tid bits of info here and there but he delt mostly with kribs.
Are there any other "show stoppers"?

It is hard to beat a nicely colored pair of kribs ... or their close cousins.

I really like the Apistogramma cacatuoides
they would be ok in a 30 gal?
I do have a 65 gal with no real plans yet (was thinking a BA community tank but I could just do that in the 30) that I could do a larger cichlid in...thoughts??

30g would be great for a trio of A. cacatuoides. Dark substrates, planted...you will like it :)

If you really want Geos I'd pick a tank with a larger footprint. A 65g is 36"x18".....I guess is good enough for a group of small Geos....

now the dark substrate...is that what they prefer or do you just like the look?
I have a 20 gal with black flourite and it makes the tank look sooo dark.
