Geo Brasiliensis Male or Female ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had mine back before digital cameras were around, so sorry, no pics.

The ones in my pics are Geophagus iporuguensus, a more southern variant from the braziliensus complex.
I had the normal G braziliensus,(like RD) before I had digital cameras.
Always like this pic of the pair defending territory against the much larger Madagascan Paratilapia.

other southern South Americans that don't require large tanks are Gymnogeophagus, Australoheros and even some pike cichlids

Gymogeophagus yerbalito above, paso Pache below

Australoheros red cabal below

normal color above, breeding color below

and a shot of my Uruguayan (cool) water cichlid community below

I kept a single male iporuguensis several yrs ago, even as a lone male he was a bit too rowdy for the comm tank he was in at my place (125 gallon). He later went into a friends 550 gallon comm, where he continued to be a pita, with much larger fish. lol

This little guy / gal is the same way growing out with a trimac and wont back down acutally starts the problems.
