Great Michelle!!!!! Is this their first spawn? Just curious what your tank parameters are? PH, GH, Temp.??

Jamie

Thanks!
It's their first spawn in my tank - I got them this size a few months ago. The temp is about 83; haven't tested the Ph, but it's probably pretty low given te amount of driftwood I have in the tank.

Apparently the eggs were there for a little bit longer than I thought because they've hatched. The male is holding today. I've never had mouthbrooders before and it looks so weird - his cheeks are kind of puffing in and out and are very full.

Thats awesome! About how many you think you got? I would suggest to leave the fry with the parents unless you have other species in the tank with them. If you leave the fry with the parents they will produce better spawns later. It helps gives them experience in parenting. If they eat them, don't sweat it, they will get better with time.

Yeah, I was thinking about taking some fry out to raise separately once they were free-swimming, but since this is the first spawn I've seen, I think I'll let nature take its course and wait till the next time.

Ive got some steindachneris.

I have 5 Geophagus surinamensis. All are doing well. Waiting to pick up some red head tapajos.

Speaking of Geos....
Just checked Jeff Rapps site and he has Geophagus argyrostictus. Grrrrrrr....I've wanted to get some of these for so long and now I have no room in my tank. It's probably for the best - he wants $35 a piece for 2".

Here's a pic from Cichlidae.com:
