Hi all,

bought these as Geophagus iporangensis but I don't think they are.
Can anybody ID these with any degree of certainty for me

I'm not sure on that one. They almost look like Rams. Someone will chime in to help you out. How many fry did they have?

Why do you think they aren't? G. iporangensis would actually be my first guess, although I haven't kept them personally. Looks like the mature size is right (if the fry in the last pic are theirs).

Look like my iporangensis

the pictures I found on the net of Geophagus iporangensis look nothing like them.
To answer your questions. They are breeding like mad. I have them in a mixed South American cichlid tank and three weeks after free swimming there are still about 50 fry doing well. I bought four fish and got 2 pairs. Lucky me but all the other fish are squeezed into a tiny fraction of an 8 foot tank. Really need to get the situation under control and divide them up into to seperate tanks. Too much aggro. One of my Satanoperca daemon got the living daylights beaten out of him when he ventured too close to the other pairs spawn.
Ah well, just another good reason to put up another 2 tanks and justify it to my darling wife. Oh wait, make that three. My G. steindachneri female is holding :nilly:

I have two of these guys...keyhole cichlids. Yours don't have as much of a keyhole but body shape and placement of the black spot on their sides is indicative.

These are not keyhole cichlids, Cleithracara maronii. Keyholes do not have spangling on their sides; they are a solid-colored fish ranging from whitish-gray to brown, with a bar through the eye and the keyhole marking on their flanks. Keyholes also lack the black dorsal hard rays that this fish exhibits.

It looks like G. iporangensis to me. Look here: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus='Geophagus'&species=iporangensis&id=743

I don't have pictures of mine at work but mine do have the black dorsal marking you are speaking of but they also have the keyhole marking on thier side. Guess I was dooped by the LFS or have a keyhole hybrid. Either way OP, whatever they are, nice looking fish.

Agreed that they are not Keyhole cichlids. I think that assumption is based on the black marking on the face, but the iporangensis has that as well. I've been researching them of late and would really like to get some, if I could find any where I live. Wish I was in Ireland, so I could take some of your fry. Good looking fish. Yours look rather young yet, though. I'm betting they'll color up as they grow.
