saw this pair at lfs today and they didn't know what they were.

altifrons? abalios? ...thoughts?

The striped tail, lack of opercular mark, and red eyes all point to G. abalios, a very rare find!

For me, their geophagus pindare.

What ever they are, you'll want to be getting some sand for them, getting feeding as they would in the wild.

How big are they? They do look like abalios, but the only ones I've ever seen has slightly more red. Abalios also get pretty large, so they would need to be 6 inches or so to start having trailers like the ones in the pics.

They are about 4". I didn't get them - way overpriced...

Interesting take. I thought male and female pindare look about the same, and they don't have longer trailers? These two look very different in terms of trailer length but otherwise similar.

Yes - I have sand substrate in my Gym/Geo tank. PITA to keep it clean but fun to watch.
