Not to question what you said but I wonder how individuals of the same species would exhibit variations in these traits... It's just difficult to imagine from a genetic and developmental point of view. Any pictures?

The original G parnaibae publication is here http://globiz.sachsen.de/snsd/publikationen/Zool_Abh/zool_abh_55_2005_69-75.pdf

I hope this won't eventually lead me to spend $100 on those two! :)

Yes, the G. parnaibae data is correct and matches the original document (I also have it).

You can read the original descriptions of G. abalios, G. dicrozoster and G. winemilleri here...

The data of the original fishes (Holotype and Paratypes) are listed and their E1 scale counts are also listed and vary between individuals, as do the spine counts.

I wonder how individuals of the same species would exhibit variations in these traits

If not for the variation, we wouldn't have so many nice species!

If you want some of them I would wait and order online. I've seen them for $10-15 at 3 inches from a couple of different online dealers. You could get 4 of them with shipping included for the price of those 2. Good looking fish can be hard to pass up though!
