Before the great tank die of 2013 I had a group of Geo. Red Heads all around the 3.5-4" range and noticeable color on the heads. When it came to restocking my tank I pretty much was set on doing the same fish as I didn't get to see them as adults, so I bought another group from a different source (both groups were bought from highly reputable vendors that the majority of MFK cichlid and non-cichlid owners know). My new group is all around the 3.5" mark with the largest one being shy of 4" and there is absolutely zero color on their heads.

Being a Geo. Red Head newbie still I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I will admit that I'm a tad disappointed that they aren't showing any color like my previous batch did but I'm wondering since these fish are notorious slow growers if the coloring up stage is also completely random?

For a diet they are getting NLS pellets and spirulina flake - appetite and everything else seems normal compared to my last group. Water changes are 2-3 times per week 20-30% each time (this isn't done because nitrates are high but rather I have the time so might as well do em).

amount of red and all pretty qualities varies within my group. probably why people get more than they intend to keep, & choose the best, in addition to pairs.
the genetics may not be as good in this batch of yours.

Those still seem fairly small for a lot of color. For mine it was like one day no color and the next...pop...really colorful. They will color up eventually.

I have seen roughly this size red head in local stores here in central Florida and they had a lot more color than that. Is it possibly they are not red heads? I know a lot of geos look very similar when they are small, but I have seen 3" orange heads (same species as the red heads) with a lot of very noticeable color.
