Geophagus compatibility with tetras

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a shoal of 21 Neon tetras, my Geophagus Surinamensis took it down to 16 overnight. These were all adult size, neons. If it fits in their mouth, its probably going in. I have some coin sized angels in there right now and they leave them alone. All of those Geos are lumped togehter as "Surinamensis", there alot of different, but still very simlar sp..

yeah i would stick with a higher bodied tetra, i really like serpae tetras and plan on getting a nice sized school next time they go on sale, my suris are still small (largest is around 4.5in) so im not expecting any issues with them. i had a school in my tank before and really liked the look of them and they school tightly as well, but then i took in a rescue O for a few days and of course he did what Os do best haha

I lied, I came home one day to witness one of my large Altifrons trying to shove an angel into his mouth.

i've got 6 1"-1.5" serpaes in my geo tank. they were the guinea pigs... not a single serpae has been deispatched. none of the eartheaters (guinacara sphenoza, threadfin acaras, geo. altifrons) care for them. my largest eartheater is a 7" altifrons. its like the serpaes don't even exist. i'd like to try rummy nose tetras, but i'd feel bad if they were eaten and i'd don't really want to have 2 tetra species in there if they were to survive...

Why don't you want to two tetra species? If you're trying to be realistic, it doesn't seem implausible that you'd have two tetra species in the same region.

A large school of one species of tetra looks alot nicer than having 2 different species of tetra. Emperor tetras would be a good bet (and they live a lot longer than most tetras) Buenos Aires tetras(they eat plants and can be nippy)a group of red tail chalceus (bitey, get 9 inch but still a tetra) or if you didn't care about SA species I would do congo tetras.
