Ok sooo... I bought this fish labelled as a Geophagus Surinamensis. He is around 4''. I was paying particular attention to the olive green patternation, the black eye stripe, the colourful pectoral and anal fins, they have gorgeous red - orange colours with blue outlining on the pectoral and tiny blue spots on the anal fin. I was also looking at the black front of the dorsal fin. The black spot in the middle, surrounded by lots of small pearlescent dots in almost perfect rows. The tail fin also has these little blue spots, as they are in the anal fin. I hope this fish can be identified. Thanks!

I have already had mixed reports on what this fish is. I have been told it is an Acarichthys heckelii, a geophagus taeniopareius and I considered that it may be a hybrid, but after researching the breeding of these fish I have realised it is not easy and highly unlikely it is a hybrid.

I was also thinking this may be an extremely rare specie or a new species :) I guess these are wrong...Thanks guys!!!!

Ok..I know they are agressive...I might have to get rid of it because of my discus..

Ok so I go into my tank..Lights are off, I turn on the room light and....THERE IS NO BLACK BAR ON HIS DORSAL :o Its annoying...lol

It's A. heckelii without a doubt.

Geophagus sp. do not have the black spot on the dorsal, ever.
And pay attention to the barring. Not like Geophagus sp. They go down from the dorsum, then diagonally toward the fish's head to the middle of the fish and then back straight down.
Here are some pics of my A. heckelii to compare to.

My male killed my female and then killed a pair of angelfish he shared his tank with. I got rid of him at 5". I hate to tell you to get rid of yours, they really are very pretty fish. Perhaps you can just separate them?

here is one of my males at about 8" - they are REALLY stunning when grown to adulthood!

Ok so when I can I will get rid of him. My fave lfs (not where I got him) can get me a 100% true Surinamensis soo..I guess I will get one there.
