Hi friends,
This is my first post here in this forum.Well had been in cichlid keeping only malawian mbuana for 2 years and then had planted. But now its time I should start chasing my dreams.Well I have got a dream for getting 6 geophagus red head tapajos which is luckily available now in my area at a cheap rate. They are about 1 inch to 1.5 inch in size. But the problem lies in the size of my tank. Its an odd 39 inchx19inchx19inch roughly 55 gals.Is it anyway possibe to have the fishes of my dreams in there. Please advice for I badly need your help.

Well often I find people saying that you can't go with 6 to 8 geophagus red heads in a 55 gal tank.Well I shall use it as a grow out tank as I plan to upgrade to a 100 gallon in 4 to 5 months down the line.Just want to know how fast do they grow and how long can I keep the 1" juveniles in a 3 footer , 55 gal tank???

These geos dont get as big as most so they should be ok in the 55g for awhile, glad to see your going to upgrade though. Honestly I'd upgrade as soon as possible so you could keep other fish in the 55g. I'd say once they hit the 3" mark transfer them. Just makesure you keep up on water changes and you should be fine!

I think you should be ok. Red heads get about 6 inches...

anyway on topic you should be fine the tank foot print is in your favor, nice and wide.

Thanx a lot for all those replies.Well even I think that the tank appears too small for them.May be its wiser to get a big , something 100 gals for them first and then purchase the fish.Maybe than I won't get them that cheap but its much better to pay a little extra for your dreams. What do you think???Actually Geophagus and nicaraguense are my fish of dreams and someday maybe 5 years down the line plan to make 2 6 footer (180 gal) tank for them. But realy I am looking to se of my 3 footer and go for a minimum second hand 4ftx18inchx24inch...(90 gals tank)...can you all show me some pics of great geophagus setups ....something with driftwoods and white sand as substrate .......it will be helpful...

Hey great news Friends....Have sold my 3 footer...plan to get hold of a 5 footer 125 gal tank ...so please pour in your ideas about the stocking of it...I definitely would get 6 Geophagus Red head Tapajos baby...anything else as I want it to be strictly South American Biotopic........

You will love red heads man!! I have a 210 with nothing but geos they are amazing! they go as a pack picking out an Alpha aka the leader. It shows magnificent colors and long trailers
