I just picked up this geophagus today at the LFS. He is about 4 to 4-1/2 inches right now. I am thinking he is probably a geophagus abalios but am uncertain as he looks a bit different than the others I used to have. Any help IDing him would be helpful. Thanks.

wow nice pick up.. It could be a geophagus altifrons

He was the only one there at the fish store in a tank with some central american cichlids and large severums. He seems quite a bit happier having sand to sift and being with other earth eaters. I would like to find three or four more Altifrons about the same size to put in with him but I don't see any for sale anywhere. He is very nice looking.

I disagree with this being a Geophagus altifrons varient, the stripes in the caudal fin and the small/medium midlateral spot IMO suggest Geophagus sp. 'Pindaré'.

How are my old Satanoperca mapiritensis doing Cindy? Have they spawned for you again? Hope your well, we are moving out of Vancouver, you should drop by the new house next month :)

Hey Justin,

I was thinking it might not be Altifrons as most do not have stripes in their caudal fins. That is why I was thinking abalios but that did not seem quite right either.

The Maps are doing fine. They have spawned a few more times but the male has taken to eating all the eggs faster than the female can pick them up. If either of the two smaller females are ready to spawn the largest female gives them a hard time and the male only shows minor interest at best. They eventually give up and just start laying eggs on the rock while the large female chases them and the male eats their eggs without fertilizing them. I do have three 2 inch juvies in with them as well now. I have really enjoyed them but am actually now trying to find them a new home! I would like to set up another large tank but my husband does not want anymore tanks. I wanted to have some different earth eaters but I just don't have the room if I keep the Maps and my wild angels.

I would love to come see your new place and tank set ups some time. :)

I can't see the pics too well on my phone, but my guess would be sp. Tapajos II.
