Geophagus ID help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can't see the detail of the fish either....damn laptop. JK47 and Nemesis, do you guys have the fish meristics for G. sp. "Pindare" and G. sp. "Tapajos II"...my ID sheet is lacking info on both of those species.

OP, I do think this is not a commonly seen species like G. atlifrons or abalios. Anyway you can get a picture of the fish slightly stressed that way we can see the bars on the flank of the body

I will try to get some better pics this morning. I took the pictures above right after I got him and put him in my 125. Would love to get an ID on him if possible.

Well, I got a few more pics. It is hard to get this guy to show his bars! I chased him around for a bit with a net but he still did not show them much; of course all the rest of my fish are showing all their bars. The pics aren't too much better so I do not know if they will help or not.

It looks like a true geophagus surinamensis, or my other guess would be geophagus parnaibae. im no expert, better get Peathenster to look at this thread :)

Geophagus argyrostictus. Try that.

It's definitely not parnaibae. I don't think it's argyrostictus either because they're supposed to have an infraorbital stripe. Something about the spot is throwing me off... does it look particularly high on the body to anyone else?

The stripes in the tail are confusing, too. It has similar colors to pindare but they have spots in the tail. Parnaibae have stripes but their body color looks nothing like that. I was going to suggest it may actually be surinamensis, but from what I've read about true surinamensis, they also have spots rather than stripes in the caudal fin.

*confused*
