They appear to be members of the surinamensis species complex. The main thing I can tell you about Geos is that they like sand to root around in and their water in the upper 70's or more.

how big is it steve.
how many bars does it have on the flanks it looks like 5 or do you have a flank shot.
it does look like it could be a surinamensis variant.
i will get my book out and have a look

I'm warining you geos are very addictive. One bad thing about them is mine love to root-up the plants. Good Luck

Yes I know ive already discovered that :grinyes:

Ive been out to a few LFS looking for more but the price tags seem to be quite high and id rather spend my money on my oddballs.

I am looking to get more surinemensis though.

I've seen that particular species (or one very similar) listed as G. abalios, which may or may not be a valid scientific name (I think it may have more to do with locality). I do believe it is in the surinamensis complex, and I know the majority of them come from the orinoco river area. Congratulations on such a nice find! Honestly, they are one of the most fascinating and beautiful of all the fish I've kept, and I'd be hard pressed to set up any tank without at least one.

full side shot aka flank shot

certain geos have specific characteristics the make them identifiable and others look alike but come from a different river or area and are given names which include the river.
its quite hard to tell without some info.
