Geophagus ID

It doesn't seem to fit nicely into any of the described species. The tail and pattern in the anal fin and pelvic fins makes me think Geophagus sp. Tapajós II, but transversal bars are not shown well in any of the photos. I'd like to see a picture that shows them being expressed.

G. abalios is a possibility but to me look somewhat different. It is certainly not G. surinamensis, and doesn't seem to have the blues that G. megasema show in their anal fin, pelvic fins, and posterior of the dorsal fin.

The eye is quite interesting, it looks like a French flag, especially in the second photo (just the wrong direction).

To me it shows all of the definable characteristics Geophagus abalios, even the darker patch of orange scale speckling from behind the pectoral fins to the lateral spot - everything minus the red iris, and possibly a slightly longer forehead than most abalios.

This slightly longer forehead is very similiarly shaped to a G. altifrons. Having a quick peak through Weidner's book,Geophagus cf. altifrons "Tocantins" has a striped caudal pattern blurring in with spots closer to the base of the fin, a half red iris, similiar body speckling, a quite green sheen appearance, and what I would consider to be the same body profile.

The same can be said, possibly even more so, for Geophagus cf. altifrons "Aripuana II", in fact I'd almost consider dropping money on it. If anyone has a copy of South American Eartheaters, flick over to page 153 and let me know what you think. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of photos of these guys floating around so reference material is limited.

That's probably an incorrect ID, but I believe it's closer to this species than it is to abalios or megasema.

or mybe a type of cupid cichlid

Biotodoma cupido is a member of a different genus and looks completely different.

Edit: If it's stressed in that photo, and colours up more after being a fed a good diet, I guarantee it's abalios.

yeah, I just moved him into that tank. He is stressed, I will get better pictures in a couple of days.
