  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Still very young but I'm going to go with geophagus brachybranchus. Looks like it's tail will turn into the same pattern plus the black chin marking.

Nice geo. I always thought they were ugly looking fish but my friend got me into liking them. Now I got 3 of them in my 240 gallon and 1 in my 120.

It's hard to tell if there's a preopercular mark from that picture. It looks like it's faintly there.

I had G. brachybranchus. They have a preopercular mark and a black throat. If you look at the fish from head-on, do you see black underneath their gill covers?

Mine also had black-tipped hard rays on the dorsal fins.

That looks like a geophagus jurupari to me.

I'm trying to think of a polite way of saying this, so don't take this as a personal dig, but you really, really need to learn a bit more about eartheaters!

Firstly, there is no such thing as "Geophagus jurupari". There is Satanoperca jurupari, which was once considered part of the genus Geophagus (before it was split into Geophagus, Satanoperca, Gymnogeophagus, etc, and a heap of other still to be classified species, like ex-Geophagus brasiliensis).

Secondly, jurupari looks absolutely nothing like this fish. This is S. jurupari;

I can't suggest a good website regarding Geophagus identification or species profiles, and the best book on the subject is very expensive and hard to find (not to mention a little out of date in some areas), but if you read through posts like this one you can learn a lot from people like ryansmith83, who correctly identified the fish in the post above yours and explained the difference that lead to the ID. It is a very confusing subject, given that there are a lot of very similar looking species (especially when young) and more often than not they are incorrectly named in the shops.

HTH!

I highly, highly recommend Cichlid Room Companion to people. http://www.cichlidae.com

I realize it's $30 for a yearly subscription, but if nothing else it gives a great photo reference and also has info on where type localities of cichlids occur, etc. They have more info on some species than others, but I still find it's a very valuable resource. I've also heard that Weidner's book is amazing but I cannot bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars on a book (given that you can actually locate a copy).

I've been wanting to sign up for that for a while, do you have a subscription? I have the Thomas weidner SA eartheater book but still want more references. Do you know if there different references on the site that are dofferent then the book?
