Got this guy today, LFS labeled as Geophagus jurupari.

It seems to scoot around the bottom of the tank, and never seems to leave the sand. Is this normal or is something wrong with it?

Jurupari's are sand sifters and generally scour the bottom looking for food. I feed mine small sinking pellets that go directly to the sand.

Can you post a picture of it?

I'm wondering if you maybe got a Retroculus, which can probably be confused with a Satanoperca but definitely has goby-like behavior.

Otherwise, if it's really a Satanoperca, maybe he's just stressed from the move and will resume his normal swimming in a few days. Or he has a swim-bladder issue. It could be a lot of things.

My jurupari always stays at the lower levels of the tank, he dosn't really act like a goby though. just like all my other geos.
Tapajós seem to be more likely to venture into the higher portion of the tank. at least in my aquarium thats how it is.

I agree that it may be retroculus, they look just like satanoperca species only a lot more compressed. an easy mistake to make for an LFS.

Jurupari will be absent of spots on their flanks and face. if the fish is covered in light dots it is a Satanoperca Leucosticta
Does it look like this, cause this is a Jurupari.

You have a satanoperca leucosticta, the 3 lines of reflective scales under the dorsal fin are a dead giveaway. It is on the sand because it is stressed, possibly because you did not acclimate it correctly or your tank parameters are poor.

Are there special acclimatization procedures for this species?

pH 7
NH3 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 0

At the LFS it was hanging out at the tank bottom, but it was a small tank and it was bare bottomed, so I attributed it to those conditions.
