Geophagus "Red Hump" Eartheater Color Change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really want to keep steindachneri one day. A LFS near me has them, and it's fun to watch them interact. Dominant males are beautiful.

If it changed it's color dramatically, it would be mostly from the stress of being netted, bagged, and dropped into a strange environment. Let it settle in for a week or two and see what happens. For now, by those photos @ 3" it looks female.

Agreed about the color. I'll have to wait and see after he settles more.

I'm standing strong about the male though! I wish I had pictures from the LFS tank!!!

So I'm reviving this thread! Not much has changed in the appearance of my Red Hump. The picture I have posted is identical to the one from the first post. I began thinking it was a female due to it's appearance and behavior. These fish are pretty rare (at least in my area). I went back to the store where I got the believed female, and they had only a few left. After doing a ton of research, I believe have have purchased a male! The believed male is in the darker picture. That was about 2 minutes after being added to my QT tank... What do you think? Do I have a pair?

I'm going to leave my new Geo in the QT with my Shovelnose until May 15th. The Shovelnose is in there to grow, the Geo to QT, obviously. My Firemouth has been giving my first Geo some issues. I'm going to put my Firemouth in my QT tank as a timeout tank. He needs to chill lol

My .02, it appears to be female.

I had a a Male with a harem of 4 females; although I suspect 1 of them was a submissive male (see pic). The alpha male's hump was definitely defined by the time he was 3" and his coloring was much more vibrant as well (sorry, cant find a pic of the male).

Check out my most recent response on the thread. I got a second Geo. I believe it is a male.
