GEOPHAGUS SCHOOLING

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a group of 12 altifrons in my 1400L tank and although I wouldn't call them "schooling" in the true sense of the word they were certainly more social than many other cichlids would be. I think in nature they live in loosely associated groups rather than schools, and pairs probably pair up and become a bit more defensive and separate when breeding. I think keeping them in single species groups is a good idea, but only if you have the tank space...

I have a lot of different types of geo they co exist some are more aggressive then others but I think the more you put in there the less likely to pick on each other. but some groups stay together only because they a smaller and there is safety in numbers. But not a school

hmm well ok. let me pitch this out there. i just picked up a geophagus albios... after reading this but... regardless. in my 220 amazon tank. with p. bass, oscar, gar, silver dollars, flowerhorn... what would be a good choice for a school?

I have 2 geos (silver ones) and 6 tinfoil barbs that are a little bigger than my 2 geos. Now I know geos are not schooling fish like the tinfoils. But what I have noticed is the geos will school with the tinfoils quite a bit. It's funny to watch. Or the tinfoils will follow the geos also. This is what I have observed. So, I have 2 geos, 2 tiger Oscars, 6 tinfoils barbs in my 240 gallon.

I'd be worried about the aggression from the flowerhorn, but that aside if you already have one G. albios then the obvious thing to do would be to find another 3-4 more of a similar size.
