Geophagus Surinamensis at PetSmart

In my other post I mistook "lateral" line for "vertical" line for some reason. lol and chrisplosion, look at it's tale. If there are blue dots all over the tale, it's an altifron. If there are some blue dots and some blue lines, it is an abalios.

His tails get red but the dots are just translucent. They might be blue but with the river rock I have in the tank really dulls him out. I might move him to my 75 gallon with small black gravel to bring out his color.

So which do you think he is?

Abalios do need a bigger tank. right now I have 12 ranging from 4-6in in a 180g and it looks crowed. will be going my 240g when I get it set up. I personally like light colored sand for these fish. I will take some pictures of the sand I got, which JK47 recomended, which is awesome. I use to have black sand and it made them look darker. Their vertical black lines, like the ones in the picture, would show all the time! so I switched to a lighter sand and now they are their natural golden color.

I bought 2 of those fish about a month ago. It was against my better judgement because i really like to know what I'm getting thats why I normally order my fish from Rapps. I guess I will have to wait and see. They are most likely Altifrons. I had similar conversation with a LFS owner and tried to tell him that True Surinamensis are very hard to come by in the hobby but he insisted they are a dime a dozen. I wish LFS owners would do some research on the fish they are selling. Its really easy to do a search.

Here's some pic's of the ones at my LFS. I kept them at their original size for a better look. I was mistaken when i said they had blue dots on the caudal fin. These have vertical stripes. Still no idea what they are. And yea the person there was not very informed on these fish. Don't think anyone there was.
