The black bars will tend to fade with maturity, mine had them when younger.
my adult suri's bars really show when he gets pissed. and the switch to black gravel made them stand out more as well..

Mine have yet to sift through the gravel they are eating the food at the top and middle. Maybe when they get a little more confortable they will. Ny firemouth seems to chase them here and there

They do a lot better with sand to sift through.

They look like young altifrons, the true surinamensis is Uber rare now in the trade as its only exported from surinam and, theres not been fish ship from their in a long time.

Although there are some F1 true surinamensis around comming out of holland and germany.

my thoughts exactly look like young altifrons but its so hard to tell what they are and true suris are like rocking horses droppings to find.

Ya I know sands there prefered choice. Right now I have small smooth pebbles. I have sand in the 90 gallon and I hate it now I feel like when I vaccum I don't get anything up. At least with the gravel I see the crap and everything bein sucked out.

sure are beautiful... the colors are so stunning even though it is pastels ...

Sweet little geos ya got there. There should be captive offspring soon in the states of surinamensis. I have a buddy with a 3 year old group that just startd spawning! His altifrons started spawning at just over a year old.

They will sift gravel when they get a little larger. Mine are adult Altrifon and sift through the gravel constantly. Have been doing this for years. The five in my ninety are about 5 years old.

Its the case now, when ever we get wild geophagus listed they usually are under the name ' Geophagus Surinamensis' They usually turn out to be altifrons.

I do have a friend who has some true F1 surinamensis and they look totally different.
