Geophagus Surinamensis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
G. dicrozoster (dicrozoster means "forked belt", pertaining to the 4th lateral bar, which is forked). Most G. surinamensis that I have seen in the trade are dicrozoster. They are part of the G. surinamensis group of species. True G. surinamensis is from a small region in Suriname and not all that common in the trade.

Wow, thanks a lot. I always thought mine looked a tad different the the pictures I've seen. Much appreciated.

sweet geo, but i want your CL, lol. there hard to find at that size, everything i see is an inch.

nice growth! but yeah i second that they dont really look like suris, my suris always display their prominent lateral spot and their stripes are very faint and more straight, not forked like yours are... where did you get them from? alot of petstores sell "surinamensis" that are either dicrozoster, altifrons or abalios

I got him from my LFS and he was the only one with the forked bars but they were all pretty small so they may have just not grown into the stripes yet.

yeah if you got from lfs then i doubt they are true suris, normally true suris you have to actually order from a reputable breeder/importer...

That's a very interesting fish. Do you have only one? The lateral bars are totally messed up (so the speak). G. dicrozoster is a possibility, but the tail is a bit too spotty and I don't see an obvious cheek mark.

This is what a young G. dicrozoster typically looks like:
