Could you guys tell if these two are surinamensis aka red striped eartheaters? Just got them a while ago because Ive been looking for them and they seem pretty rare here. I'm really digging them. Cute little fish. Its been some time now since I last got a cichlid. :) Right now the two are in a tank with a betta. They started "eartheating" as soon as I dropped them in the tank. Lol. Heres a couple of pics. Sorry my phone cam sucks

It's hard to tell when they're this young. Original Surinamensis are extremely rare. Most likely you have Altifrons. I've got 7 altifrons. Also a new Geophagus group on FB. Look up "The Geo Life"

Probably. They were labeled as Surinamensis at the lfs. Hoping they are. Are they usually aggressive? Theyre both new and already chasing each other. Or is the tank just too small? Im gonna move them to the 20 tomorrow

If they came from an LFS they are probably not true surinamensis. That is a catch-all name used on wholesale lists for geos. Sometimes they are abalios, sometimes they are altifrons. I see them in shops here all the time and a few online sellers often list them incorrectly, too.

Well the lfs I got them from has a variety of baby geos. I hope they got this one right. Lol still hoping. What should I look out for about these guys? Theyre getting pretty territorial.

Again, I don't think they got that one right, based on the small midlateral spot. It looks like G. altifrons. They are a larger-growing geo that can get somewhat aggressive. Most geos do better in shoals of 4 - 6 as juveniles to spread the aggression around a bit.

those look to be geophagua altifrons like ryan said, it looks to have a small midlateral spot as altifrons do have.
