Wow.. They look almost identical, how do we tell the difference?

Suri's are rare so that helps narrow them out of the equation, in most cases. Acarichthys heckelii has a bar through the region where the eye is. Rainbow (literally) colors in the anal fin, and long filaments (string like extensions) coming off of the dorsal and caudal fin. Fairly easy to spot after you have looked at a few. Have some fun with google and the common name threadfin acara.

yeah i read Suri's are rare thus it prompted me to post here for clarification... have been googling the whole morning.. and i agree it is the threadfin acara, after looking at photos and comparing side by side.... notice the mouth difference and the long filaments.... now i shall focus on the eyes... lol

thanks for helping... considering if i should get this batch then...

Do you think the mix well with Malawi and Tangy cichlids?

i thinking to comm them together.. tank size is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft.. sand substrate

Happy to help. If you don't have a large tank it may not be a great idea. They are stunning fish but tend to be very hard on each other as adults and require a larger tank than most others in the "earth eater" group.

6 x 2 x 2 enough?

I am intending to purchase 8 of them, seller is enticing me to get 16... lol

actually i have 2 6ft tanks but not sure if they would do well with my aro

i am considering 8 per tank, 16 seems to be too much considering i have other cichlids

A large group of those would look amazing. As far as adults go they may reduce their numbers on their own. A 180 would last a while at a minimum but you would need to cut back eventually.

Do not mix threadfin acaras with Mbuna.
