Geophagus tank mates? 90 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd move the altifrons unless you are definitely getting atleast a 180, they get big and like groups. Dats are great looking fish and if I remember correctly they are fairly slow growers so you'll have a little time. I would be hesitant to add angels with brasiliensis, while the are not aggressive compared to a midas they can still be surly coupled with their size an angel wouldn't have a chance. If I were in your shoes I'd get schooling fish and wait for the upgrade until getting more cichlids, but then again an overstocked tank makes it easier to justify the cost of upgrading.

Ive been looking into green tiger barbs. A large group like 12 of them. Not so much a monster fish but it would give the tank some action.

Rehome the altifrons for sure. An electric blue jack dempsey would work. Most are pretty easy going, but every now and then you will get an aggressive one. The issue becomes that you have all bottom dwelling fish. For upper level cichlids, I recommend festivum and angels. The bras geo can be aggressive, but most tend to be fairly mild mannered. Otherwise go with some schooling/shoaling fish like the barbs or some tetras. Be warned with geo and barbs, the alpha male geo will develop nice streamers and they will become targets for most barbs. I tend to recommend tetras for geo tanks because of less aggression and tighter schooling.

Festivum are best kept solo or in groups of four or more because they will develop a social hierarchy. Males top out at 8" and females 6", but 4-6" is more commonly found.

Alright sweet thank you! I will get some! I'm hopefully trading the 3 of the 5 altifrons that are the smallest (2 inches) and a 2 I ch gold severum for the 5 inch electric blue jack dempsey. So we will see how it works lol. Then I will get rid of the 2 bigger altifrons. I actually have other fish in the tank that I didnt list but they wont be there for long.
2 inch jack dempsey (selling this weekend)
Four wild caught green terrors from ecuador all 1 1/2- 2 inches. And a farm raised green terror 2 1/2 inches. They stay towards the top. But I will be finding them new homes soon. Sadly :(
