Geophagus tank started!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good so far.. Can't wait to see it stocked.. I would go with the Tapajos, or the Heckelii.. I have to admit i love my Tapajos.. I had Altifrons, and Jurupari but like my OH's way better.

cichlids tend to stick to the bottom of the tank. true mid water type of cichlids are probably more along the lines of discus or angels. south and central american cichlids typically fall more into that bottom category.
having said that i personally think the red head geo craze is a bit of a craze. having kept all those fish you have listed, i would say altifrons probably make the most graceful inhabitants. i think they turn out to be a nice size - around 8-10 inches in body length max. and their finnage is stunning.
red heads are nice and all but i think they are kind of expensive and tend to be feisty. hecklii also tend to be feisty but albeit somewhat boring in my experience. the juruparis are ok but colors are a bit bland.
so my two cents is get a school of 6-8 larger altifrons, a dark or natural background and you have a combination of good looking fish, graceful, moderately aggressive but still pretty mellow and they get to a nice size where they make a visual impact in a larger tank such as yours.
regardless, good choice going with eartheaters - i'm sure you can't go wrong with any of those choices!

Simply amazing!

Thanx

Very nice scaping! The first pic is my fav.

Thanx me to cant wait to stock it!!!!!

Why not do the red heads and heckeli? They occupy different parts of the tank and would give you action along the bottom and mid-water.

l thought of that but l seem to like the idea of a single species tank!!!!!
