where do ya live for some fry pick up :D

Not up for sale quite yet, Gonna wait till they put on some weight. It will probably be another month or two.

fudgeeee i knew this was going to happen :(

when i moved the male back to the main tank he paired up with another female. I just picked up a breeder set up last night so i can set it up for them but when I came home from school today they already laid eggs. They are getting EXTREMELY aggressive to their tank mates.

What should I do?

I am about to set up the breeder tank for them right now. Should I wait for them to pick them up and move them? Will the move possibly make them swallow the eggs?

I would leave all your Orangeheads in their current tank, use the new tank as a growout tank. I think Orangeheads are the type of fish that pair up at random(sorry, don't know the scientific name for that). I would just siphon out the babies after they have been free swimming for a while or leave them be in the current tank they are in. Moving the fry while parents are holding will be a delicate task.

I'm sure Ed B. will chime in soon, he has tons more experience than myself and can give you more accurate advise on keeping a successful spawn.

Where did they lay at bro? If it's just on a flat river rock move it into the new breeder tank with the two fish - they shouldn't have an issue. Even if they do it won't be long before she's ripe to lay again, y'know?

they moved the sand over and laid them on the tank itself. :( i'm jsut going to wait for them to pick up the eggs and move them to the breeder.

What size is the breeder?

I would just leave them in the main tank, it's very unlikely they would hurt the other fish beyond a torn caudal or dorsal fin and I think with first-time-spawning pairs it is best to intervene as little as possible and let them figure out how to do it themselves (may take a several tries). But, it's fine to move them, they shouldn't eat the eggs/fry. It works best if you can corral them into a bucket. It's very likely they will spit the fry during the transfer but if you sit the bucket on the floor for a moment, they should gather them back up rather quickly.

Secondly, I would only remove the holding fish, particularly if the breeder is a small tank. The female won't need the male harassing her (as in your first experience ;) ). IF you plan to transfer her, I would try it very late on the second day after she's picked up so that the fry have hatched. This will be before she has released the fry, so the male shouldn't have any. If in the small chance both fish pick up initially, I would still only move the female, or do as you did previously and plan on returning the male to the main tank to allow the female the raise the fry.

I will add that I've never had a single fry survive being transfered to another tank before they were 10 days old, but can have almost 100% survival rate if you can wait that long or longer. I would love to see some pics if you could add some. Good luck!
