Hi there,
I am new here! I have been keeping tropical fish for a number of years now and have just bought my biggest ever tank, a 350L corner unit. I have just fallen in love with the geo. tapajos and am thinking along the lines of getting 4-5 of these. Question is, what companions to get? I was thinking about maybe a blue acara and I would like a shoal of congo tetras and possibly a group of 5 rainbowfish (lake kutubu or m. herbertaxelrodi). Do you think my tank is big enough or should I not consider the rainbows?
Thanks for your help!

I would scratch the Acara but everything else sounds good, granted you are buying the Geos at a small size. You can thin out the stock as they grow. Only problem I see will be feeding the Geos with the Rainbows. Just make sure your Geos are eating enough and the Rainbows and Congos aren't getting all the food. I have Congos with my OHs and they really add to the tank.;)

Thanks for the advice and the welcome!

Why not the acara?

I also really like severums but was worried about them being aggressive. Do you have any experience with these fish with severums?

Thank you.

also, my LFS recoomended keeping them with Bolivian Rams and I also have a pair of kribensis I could keep with them too. They also suggested angels - do you think this would be a good idea?

Longterm it won't work. Right now, if the fish you buy are juveniles, then yes. You will need to thin out the tank as they get bigger and begin to breed. The other fish will appreciate your decision;)

OK, I am really confused now! I have been reading that these fish are sociable and like to be in a small group of their own kind and will be fine with other mildly aggressive cichlids. So you are saying that as they get older I can only keep a pair with no other large tank mates?

What are the dimensions of your 350L? Probably 4'x1.5'

No Kribs, they are bad about nipping fins.

Geos are sociable. I did not say you could only keep "a" pair. Your tank size is your problem considering the amount of fish you want to get. You can ALWAYS thin out stock once they gain some size or buy another tank but if your were to keep the same fish in the same tank all the way until Adulthood, it won't work. Too much of a bio load, IMO.

I'm just thinking longterm, everything you listed will work for right now. Just plan ahead for an extra tank or which fish you want to keep or sell.
