Hello ,

I love Geophagus and have few altifrons at the moment...and planning to acquire Red Head Tapajos in the future..
I like Penguin Tetras , Bleeding Hearts , Colombians , Hemiodus gracilis and thought not a Tetra , Redline Torpedo Barbs..

I have seen people keep them with various kinds of Tereas and Dwarf Cichlids...but what I want to know is , which Tetras /Barbs and Dwarf Cichlid Species works best with them in your opinion??

Considering Temperature/water requirements , Providing contrast (to Red Heads) and shoaling??? and of course they shouldn't get eaten when Geos are grown up :D

You should be good with that setup. Geos are only aggressive towards each other from my experience. I have 3 Geophagus surinamensis, 2 red head tapajo and 1 red hump geo with a flagtail. None of them bother him at all. Then in my 30 I have 2 red head tapajo about 2-3" and 2 other geo(starts with a more not sure of the name) with cherry barbs and gold barbs and they don't even touch those barbs. You'll be good. The only other geo that I've kept that was aggressive was the brazillis(mispelled). That one was really aggressive towards my ebjd and other fish before I gave him up.

Thanks for your replies!
Flagtails are too large for me...but can be a good Centerpiece.
I agree Colombians look Great!

Any Fish that occupies the Upper Area??? Since Geos Spend most of the time at the bottom...
I know hatchets are an option but they look kinda ugly to me ;)

I have an Altifron with Diamond, White Skirt, Congo, Buenos Aires, & Black Neon Tetras. 12 total & I've never had an issue. I use them as dithers. There's also a Severum, EBJD, & Electric Blue Acara in there.

The only ones I question are the Red Line (Denisonii) Barbs. They aren't really meant for water temps over 76 degrees. They grow best at that or under. RH Tapajos seem to prefer 78 minimum up to 82 degrees. 80-81 seems perfect. Under 80 you'll notice the RH grow really slow.

All the tetras you mentioned are perfectly fine.

Water Temperature rarely go below 82 F here..without any heater...

I guess I'll ditch the Denisonii Barbs..

I kinda want to have all south American species...

any Upper Level swimmers to go with Red heads??

i keep mine with diamond tetra and its a great mix, the shine off the diamonds looks surprisingly good against my taps

That's ideal. Mine only venture to the upper water column to beg for food. Upper level swimmers would be an ideal way to balance out the tank with the RH's.

yes...but I'm having trouble finding a fish to go with RHs..

Like jamntoast said Diamons mix well..stil they're mid to low leve swimmers aren't they?
