Geos finally coloring up a little

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, much appreciated and it's no problem at all; they where sold to me as Abalios; got them from Jeff Rapps/TUIC

Thank you for the quick reply, I have two geos that look similar but not sure what species .

Sweet Tank Wow! I am planing on doing somthing like that, Really dig the low light driftwood planted amazonian tank set ups. Great job with that
Thanks man! The cost of decorating it was pretty reasonable in my opinion. Hope to see your version of an amazonian set up in the near future.

No proble, I know what you mean there are a lot of Geo's that are very similar to one another. Many of which are imported incorrectly under the name G. surinamensis but actually wind up being one of their closer related species. The only reason I'm pretty sure of my Geos ID is because I bought them from Jeff, otherwise I'd be lost differentiating between the other closely related Geos as well.

Nice tank decorating talent you have! Can you do mine? im pathetic at it.
Thanks man! And don't be so hard on yourself it took me a long time to get decent at tank decor set ups we all need time to find our own style. I'll give you a rundown of some of my decor and see what you can do with the choices.

The decor was pretty economical in my opinion the driftwood I got from drsfostersmith, medium pieces for $6.99, if you don't want a huge central piece and instead would rather stack several pieces to form your own design it's a decent way to go. As for the fake plants, they're actually for reptile enclosures and come with a suction cup making them easy to place along the rear of the tank and they where relatively cheap. A 12 inch long piece goes for $1.49 which is a lot cheaper then the plastic plants they sell for fish and they have at least 3 different varieties. For something similar I'd render a guess at $50 to do a 6 foot tank not including sand. If I had it to do again, like I said in an above post I'd use garnet sand for a substrate rather then the white which would add another $30 dollars to the cost.

So by all means have at it with an amazonian set up, I hope to see your version in the future and if you need anymore help pm me.

Hi koltsixx,

First, you tank is amazing; I truly enjoy the drift wood and fake plant look. I use similar decorating techniques in my tanks; however, I like the horizontal feel you gave to your tank (obviously necessary to give space for the arowana above). It makes the fake plants look like they would grow naturally that way. You have a clean epic looking tank.

Secondly, as it sounds like you are contemplating a substrate change, I will offer my experience. My Geo's colors look best over black substrate; the one that I choose to best accommodate the sand sifting and not irritate the gills was a 3M discontinued product. I subsequently found ColorScapes® Ceramic Coated Quartz Crystals sold by National Pool Tile, which worked well. I do not have experience with garnet sand; therefore, I can not compare the two.

Thank you for sharing your tank; I look forward to future updates and advice.

Thanks,
Matt

Great looking tank and fantastic stock. We have very similar tastes in what fish we like to keep. :)

Thanks a lot, it's much appreciated. I actually put the driftwood like that for My Centrodoras Cat, he likes less light and it makes him more comfortable and more active so I get to see him more. Though you're right it has the added benefit of giving the Aro more unimpeded swimming space at the top but he surprisingly makes trips to the bottom often. I had hoped that the plants would look like they where growing out of the driftwood and had hoped it looked natural so it's nice to know it worked out alright.

Thanks for the suggestion but I had done a black sand tank at one point and it was just too dark for me. I'm hoping the garnet would be a compromise, not too bright and not too dark. It's reddish in color but the smaller the grain/grit/mesh the more brown it looks from what I'm told; so I think it'll give a natural look with a little flare. Thank you though for the suggestion as my tastes may change and it's nice to have another source for good quality sand.

Updates may take awhile because I've got surgery coming up that'll make me a lot less capable of big changes for quite some time but advice I'm always willing to give or help if I can. My knowledge isn't as great as some on here but I do try to make sure the advice I give is sound or at least direct people to others I know, know better then I.

Thanks, nice to know I'm not the only one with good taste on the forum. lol Seriously though it's amazing how tastes can change I remember just a couple of years ago thinking Aro's are so common place it makes them boring but I was so wrong. Silvers just move with such grace and those eyes that watch you, truly great fish. Same goes for Geos and Sevs, fish that are readily available but still awesome both are already so use to me that they're always in the way during water changes. I actually have to cup them and move them away not that it stops them from getting in the way all over again.

Sweet tank. Looks great. How big is the tank?

Thanks, this particular tank is a 135 and is a grow out for the Aro and Centrodoras as I'm hoping to get more Centro's for a breeding attempt in the future. The Aro will be replaced by Tetragonopterus argenteus I got from Jeff Rapps as a surface fish in this tank which is an amazing tetra I've got growing out in a 75. Awesome little beasties that run all day long chasing and nipping each other. The cat if possible will be replaced if possible by Centrodoras hasemani a smaller member of the Centrodoras Genus if not them then maybe some Pimelodus Ornatus.

Very nice sir! I simply love any kind of Geo. They are fantastic fish.
