I saw one at my LFS today and fell in love. I've read they are a schooling fish, how many should I get for my 75 gallon tank? I want to make sure they are stress free and live a good life.

Owners: any tips on these guys? the person at my LFS store said they are a fairly difficult fish to maintain, I want to change that!

Thank you in advance for all answers :)

I like tho look of these but don't know anything about them so I will watch this thread too

In my experience in too small of tanks, multiple rams result in con-specific aggression. This species can be feisty with each other, usually in groups one dominant male arises and terrors every one else, especially the females. Males can become "tolerant" of each other and form little schools, and in larger tanks pairs form and can spawn. It would be best to do all males, or 1 male 3 female etc. 30g for one pair, 20g for every new ram from there on IMO.

I had 10 of them in my 75g before. There's no gender ratio I followed but I had noticed males seemed to mind their own business and sometimes showed off in an attempt to dominate the other but nothing damaging. As far as the females were concerned, I had noticed they staked claims of their territories often liplocking in the process.

I'd love to get a bunch of these guys, getting 10 would be awesome. Will they get along with my other fish?

Red Tailed black shark, serpae tetras, white skirt tetras, black skirt tetras, opaline gourami, giant danios?

How can you tell female from male?

Maybe a little nippy towards others but can't see any major problems... Females have pink Belly's and I believe in the most forward black patch the females also have blue speckles where the males just have the black patch... There's a way to tell with the fins as well but the belly trick is a pretty sure fire way at least from what I've seen

Rams are great fish to have, i had 8 of them in a 75 gallon community with 1 opaline gourami, 2 angels, orange seam and bushy nose pleco and at the time a small Blood Parrot. the Rams more or less stayed at the bottom of the tank and would come up to mid level during feeding. they never seemed to be bothered by anybody in my tank. how ever (IMO) tetras tend to me nippy and nosy but each fish is different my angels always stayed at the top and the gourami would sometimes go down to their area and "feel" them up, while the BP didnt care about them at all. I do know that they are sensitive to temp change and ammonia and nitrates and nitrites so weekly water changers are a must. even more so in my tank. Sadly all but 2 have passed but i dont think they live that long maybe 4-5 year. i could be wrong on the life line. But BEAUTIFUL fish to own!!!

I had a group of 6 in my old 55g. it was heavily planted, so plenty of places to hide and site line breaks. The only time i ever was witness to agression was when a pair spawned and were protecting the eggs.

Looks like I'll be getting some new fish tomorrow! Hopefully I get a good paycheck so I can get a bunch of them :)

Would you all recommend I do a water change tonight? That way if they are venerable to water/temp changes they are used to clean water not dirty water?
