Gestation, temps and results.

thanks for the reply.

the reason i asked you about your nitrate was because i was curious about the amount of denitrification you were getting out of your pothos. do they grow quickly and do you regularly harvest them?

also i was curious about your pH because both nitrification by biological bacteria and plant growth use valuable carbonates in your water. if you were starting out with a low pH out of the tap, you may be walking on the dangerous side and your pH might drop to near dangerous levels by going so long without a water change. obviously you have had good results so far so i would suspect your tapwater is alkaline with great buffering capacity.

i myself have a little experiment going on in my system with some aquatic and non aquatic plants but its too early to have and solid data.

thanks again!

No my pond is filled at the pond. Straight in but....the pumps are still running during the fill up. The ammonia dosent get over .25 the rays eat good and i had my first litter not to long ago and the pups did really well and have new homes. Maybe im just a worry wort but i know i couldnt just do 5 water changes a year. ill try to stretch them out and see how the ammonia does that way. All the other levels are perfect. Maybe im just being to cautious.

.25 ammonia isnt nessarily toxic. it all dependsw upon pH and temp.
check you ph, an d temp and follow the chart i just posted a link to

that link is ok

this one explains it in detail

Well if thats the case im in good shape then. From reading that chart if its pretty accurate. Thanks big help.

no prob. anytime... i figured that was the case in your case.....

I've got several very long pothos vines on my tank. I don't harvest or cut any of it back. My nitrates have creep up a little recently, around 30-35 ppm now. I have 3 hystrix and about 15 tetras in the tank. I try to do 3 small water changes a week, 25 gals each, on a system that holds about 220 gals of water. The pH out of the tap (well water) is 8.0. Tank pH sometimes drops to 7.8 if I get behind on water changes.
I think the pothos do help to reduce nitrate, but still believe water changes are the best way to reduce it.
Fire medic, in one of your pictures you show your pothos. It looks like one clump of vines? Do you cut yours back?

Yes, I do trim the bunch to keep them fro over-running the sump. Additionally I keep them inside the sump, not on top or outside of it. The humid and warm environment in the sump seems to do them well. -FM

This looks like a good rule of thumb....do alot of you use this same kind of chart. I checked the ammnoia tonight and it was at .50 so i left it go to see if the bio would bring it down itself and didn't feed them tonight. It just makes me nervouse to see the ammonia up that high. My temp is at 75 degrees and the ph dopped over night to about 6.4. It was up to about 6.8 yesterday. Thanks for any info.
