When I bought them they were covered in Dirt so I took half of a 5 gallon bucket full of rocks. I pored some onto a pool net as a strainer. Then I sprayed the rock off 2 times over the bucket of gravel. When the first batch on the net was done I pored it into a separate bucket of only clean gravel. The you just repeat the process over and over until the tank is full. Filling my tank took me 1 hour of cleaning.

If you are looking for subtrate I suggest this. Two bags filled my 80 gallon, and cost me $8. It is called pea gravel and is at home depot.
