I have hikari gold baby pellets and they float. I cant seem to get my jag to notice them, he stays at the bottom in a fake log i have. Any suggestions?

1" is really small. When they're that little, I've found it's easier to get them to eat if they're in groups. They're braver in numbers and with the competition for food, they'll actually eat aggressivlely. If you buy about 6 or 7 more you'll have better results. Then when they get a little bigger, sell some of them.

I've had two jags from when they were only a few weeks old at about 1cm in size. Even from then I never had a problem feeding them and they were always looking for something to eat. I just used the flake I was feeding my guppies etc in my community tank.

I agree with linoleum.. try something that sinks.

take a cup and put about a tablespoon of tank water in it, then dump about a 3 tablespoons of flakes in there with it and mix it up until its "doughy". then use the edge of a knife or something long and thin (i use a skewer) and scoop a chunk out and drop it in the tank. it will make a little bit of a mess, but it gets the flakes down to the bottom and at every level so hes bound to smell/taste/see it. You can make little balls as well and keep them in the fridge to just drop in like pellets. Problem with most store bought pellets is that they are usually too hard for a 1 inch fish to break up instantly.

i had the same problem with my jag till he got to about two or three inches. at that size, it seems like they tend to hide. I would use sinking pellets or something else that sinks. i used them and hikari bloodworms which I thawed first. once my jag put on about an inch or two, he picked up coming to the top for food. hes still shy but he comes out to eat.

Thanks alot. I used frozen blood worms i use for my axolotl and the jag tore them up.
