Alright, so I've currently got a 3.5" tiger oscar in a 3ft 60g with 3 pictus, 1 trachelyopterus fisheri, and 1 bristlenose. On sunday I'm picking up a 180g 6ftx2ftx2ft. My plan was to move the oscar, BN and driftwood cat into the 180, sell the pictus, and buy a Jag. How well would an O do with a Jag in a 180? Its a big tank, but is it big enough? I've always wanted a jag, but held off as I didn't have a big enough tank. Now I do, and I reckon a 12+ inch oscar and a 14-18 inch jag would look badass together.

Inwould say the tank might be big enough for two fish of said size but they could fight a lot, and if they do the jag will probably destroy the O.

I would say that for those fish a 6' might be a bit little to run. It could work though.

I would go jag pair, or oscar pair. Not sure about mixeing the species

I have a particularly nasty Oscar and an absolute monster of a jag. One of them broke the divider and all hell broke loose. Oscar took a beating and the jag was unphased despite the fact that my O never ran or backed down. This took place in a 6' 125. They were both around 10" or so

I here stories like that but also see jags in "peaceful" SA cichlid communities all the time. I was recently at a guys house looking at some of his tanks he was trying to sell and the 150 in his livingroom contained two oscars and a decent sized female Jag along with a pair of severums. He said Jag was totally calm and never bothered the oscars. I would imagine growing them out together might help a bit as opposed to throwing two full grown fish in a tank together.

It's always a coin toss with cichlids. For every story of a "peaceful" community tank there is a story of a loner cichlid that killed everyone and is now forever alone.

I should add that I had to physically separate them. The algae scrubber and net didn't work. Had to literally put my hands between them while my better half placed a new divider in the tank. Personally I won't ever house a jag with anything but the same of the opposite sex.
Haha this sounds like a hassle but I imagine a scene where someone is shouting "hey hey hey break it up already!"

Yeah I might give it a shot and try growing them out together. The O is about 3.5", so I could get a jag around an inch or so smaller and give it a shot. Would having minimal decor to claim territories and fight over work to keep agression down I wonder? Or would it make it worse? I guess I'll just have to try it with plenty of dithers and find out. If it doesn't work I can rehome one

I had 2 female jags 12-13" and a 12" albino tiger Oscar in a 240g a few years back and they were totally fine they just weren't bothered by each other, there even used to intermingle, not as if they were avoiding each other at all, they were all together from a tiny size though, and I guess that made a difference, personally I have always found jags aggression to be overrated as all the ones I've had have been very very laid back, but then again all mine have been tank bred for for at least 3 generations, and I think this may take a lot of the aggression away from them, guess a lot of your problems would come down to what sort of personalitys your O and jag have if they both chilled I would say it will work.
