Getting a 180g. Oscar plus Jag?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What other larger cichlids would work in a 180 with the jag and oscar? I've heard slight overcrowding works to reduce aggression, as none can claim a territory, much like with african lake cichlids. I do around 70% wc every 2 days even with my small oscar in the 60g, so water quality shouldn't be an issue.

Jack dempsey is a possibility. Pretty tough fish, but usually not crazy aggressive. Good luck I have an 8' 320+ gallon tank and my jag has claimed nearly half of it.

Female jag have allot better chance of working than a male.

Yeah I might give it a shot and try growing them out together. The O is about 3.5", so I could get a jag around an inch or so smaller and give it a shot. Would having minimal decor to claim territories and fight over work to keep agression down I wonder? Or would it make it worse? I guess I'll just have to try it with plenty of dithers and find out. If it doesn't work I can rehome one
of them
I had 2 female jags 12-13" and a 12" albino tiger Oscar in a 240g a few years back and they were totally fine they just weren't bothered by each other, there even used to intermingle, not as if they were avoiding each other at all, they were all together from a tiny size though, and I guess that made a difference, personally I have always found jags aggression to be overrated as all the ones I've had have been very very laid back, but then again all mine have been tank bred for for at least 3 generations, and I think this may take a lot of the aggression away from them, guess a lot of your problems would come down to what sort of personalitys your O and jag have if they both chilled I would say it will work.
I think even WC Jags like pops pops has can be chill enuff for Oscars. My Jags were/are also pretty mellow even when they had fry, they just aren't push-overs, that's all. Don't mess w/ them and they'll let you LIVE haha Now the RTMs are a TOTALLY different story.....

one of my personal favorites for a number of reasons, one of which is they tend to work in ANY tank set-up I have ever done. JDs are very under-rated in this hobby. Love 'em so much I recently went and got exactly what I had before back in 2008-2012......1 male, 6 females :D They also seem to do a great job keeping other aggressives in check without over-doing it......it's like they are "Peer-mediators "

Alright, so I changed my mind on the stocking for the 180. Because I'll sometimes have long trips away, I will not be able to constantly monitor the tank and deal with aggression issues all the time, so I would like to have completely compatible tankmates. My plan for the stocking is my current tiger oscar, a red oscar, a convict, my driftwood catfish, and 6-10 silver dollars. I would love to have a jag, but the welfare of the fish comes before my enjoyment, and the stocking I'm planning will still be really cool I reckon. With black sand, some big bogwood pieces, some hardy live plants, and maybe some frogbit.
