Well my aunt has an old 55 at her house and she doesn't want it anymore so i offered to take it off of her hands. Now I have a 55!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well whenever I actually get it which could easily be 2 weeks or more, lol But still.

Soooooooo to the real reason why I'm posting this, I'm not sure what to get. I want a big cichlid preferably Central/South American since that's what I own now. I have a GT a blue acara and juvie rokteil severums and soon to be another cichlid to go in the 55. I'm excited, lol.

Like I just said I was just thinking on 1 fish that will get pretty big so that it can just live in the 55. I would love a pair of some sorts but then their max size couldn't be that big in a 55. So what do you all suggest. A big, agressive, CA/SA cichlid for my newly aquired 55. Thanx :D

Whoa wait, what do you have the current fish in now? A GT is a 55 by itself would be awesome.

The GT is in a 29 with the blue acara. The acara was just going in there for a grow out time, but then they started to pair off so well, ya lol. So their happy in there and the severums are in a 20 long. There hope I cleared it all up.

I'd put the GT in the 55g by himself because he's going to outgrow that 29g if he hasn't already. And the Sevs are likely cramped in a 20-long, they get much bigger than that tank allows!

The severums are just growing out, their just over an inch long. They barely use up half of the tank, yes i know that they will need a bigger tank their just juvies they will be fine.

And a GT grows to be what 9 inches max in size a single 29 will be fine for the GT It's 18 inches high and 12 inches wide it will be plenty. Plus the GT is only maybe at most 5 inches long maybe if that, If when it grows bigger and I think in my opinion tha it is getting cramped yes I will get a bigger tank but at the moment there is plenty of room. And I mean it's breeding and it's growing it must not be in too much stress or harm at the moment.

Why must everyone criticize about the cichlids we have. Every single post that some writes they always have to say that it will grow out and everything else, Just because the max size off a fish is x amount, doesn't mean it's going to get
that size. And also an Ocar which can get up to 18 inches for it's max(if wrong please inform me I don't own oscars) doesn't mean it's going to get there. Plus it's not like within 6 months or even a year it's going to get 18 inches. I hear they that grow like an inch a month again Idk I don't have them please tell me if I'm wrong but that's a year and a half, in 18 months they can get a bigger tank I mean why is everyone saying that they max out at x amount when they might not even get that, plus it takes time to get to the max size. Sorry I'm just ranting now, what CA/SA Cichlid when fully grown can live in a 55.

I would put everything except the GT in the new tank and make it into a south american community with the severums and blue acara.
good fish that can live in a 55 full grown would be most Cryptoheros, Thorichthys, rainbow cichlids, smaller acaras (Bujurquina, Krobia, etc.)

midas, red devil, pair of firemouths, red tiger mota, a texas, pair of sajicas. 100 rasboras. do what u want.lol

Are you gonna eventually upgrade? Or do you want the 55g to be the permanent home for these guys?

I still stand by my post. I wouldn't house anything larger than 6" in a 29-gallon tank and male GT definitely grow larger than that. It's just a question of what is kind to the fish. If you want to house a GT in a 29g for life and it doesn't appear cramped to you, then no-one here will be able to stop you. I'm trying to be nice here, but I think maybe the reason you keep getting criticisms on your choice of fish is because you're consistently choosing the wrong fish for the size tanks you have. I'm just trying to share the advice I was given when I didn't know much about cichlids, and it's helped me a lot in the past. Most people here will argue the bare minimum for a male GT is 55g, with 75g being better.

i fully agree. have you seen full grown GTs? they are big and bulky. i couldnt imagine a GT alone even in a 29g. they need a 40g breeder or a 55g min.
