Getting a 550 gallon tank next week...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just skimmed through the entire thread. nice work!!!

did anyone mention that part of the sump volume was for power outages? meaning if you return pump shuts off, there needs to be room in the sump for the water to drain from the tank without overflowing the sump. the tank should only go down to the top of your overflow boxes teeth.

can't wait to see it stocked!!!

Thanks. This is my first tank setup, so it's a work in progress with a lot of learning. Next time it will be much better, but it will work great despite that. :) Yeah, I figured that about the sump. I was going to put a check valve after the return pump too, but I figure it won't matter either way if there is room in the sump for the extra water.

just keep you Locline returns close to the surface and there shouldn't be much siphon back through them. either that or drill a small hole (siphon break) in the return just below or at the water line.

Live Rick would look a bit funny in a freshwater you can probably sell it over Craigslist for $3 a lb. Why don't you just go sw?

This has nothing to do with the quote above,

Do you have any pics of your marine set up? I'm really interested in seeing your monster tank lol

Tank is coming along nicely now. Threw 3 larger driftwood pieces in, and now the water is brown. :( In a few days I will do another water change and see how it looks then. Filled it up with a dozen tinfoil barbs and 3 bala sharks to get things going, and I'm using Seachem Stability to speed things up. One of the driftwood pieces was already in an established system, so that should help too. This tank is gonna look awesome when it's done.

The brown in the water is from tannins in the driftwood and I would get used to it. Especially with large pieces of driftwood the tannins could leach out for the next several months to a year. Good news is that it won't harm the fish at all, and it is a great reminder for doing water changes. The longer you go between water changes the darker and browner the water will be. I was anal about tannins in my tank at first and did frequent water changes, sometimes 2 to 3 times a week, just to clear up the water. But that took a lot of time and used a ton of water. Now I just do a water change every two weeks and deal with the tinted water.
