Getting a 550 gallon tank next week...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have too many fish already, I need more tanks. lol I am still kicking myself that I didn't pick up 5 large Malagasy small spots he had at the same time. I just didn't have any tanks up for them so I had to pass. They were so pretty. Still looking for one of those.

Man, changed over one of the return jets from a single jet to a double jet, and my tank was filled to the top again this morning. Plugged one of the holes on the durso cap and drilled another smaller one to see if that brings down the water level. These things are finicky.

Tank looks great so far! Enjoying reading throughout the progress. Purigen has helped me with tannins quite a bit, but I honestly have several pieces of wood over 15 years old that still leech tannins lol

Nice job and definitely subscribed!

Thanks! Funny thing is, I knew nothing about any of this stuff until I came on this site. Now I'm talking durso this and sump that. Ammonia nitrates blah blah blah. It really is amazing what I have learned from experienced people on here in the last month or so. It has been a fun build so far, and actually looking forward to the next one, which should be much better than this one. I can actually go into it with a ton more knowledge on setup and filtration and produce a better result. I'm excited.

^^ I started here the same way. I've set up store bought wet-drys before with basic (noisy as hell) drains, but I spent months here and reef central studying and researching. This site really built my 300 lol. I was just supplied the materials and labor. :)

Further developments with the tank... Just checked water parameters, and the 400 is cycling now. Time to add the big fish today! They are not happy in the 125. There really is a decent amount of room, but the tank seems unclean and the fish are totally inactive in there. The water is hazy, stagnant on the opposite side of the filter, and dark brown from the huge driftwood I have in there. Last water change on it was less than a week ago, and water parameters are great, just checked. I think once I get that powerhead it will spice that tank up. All the growouts I have in the 55 upstairs will go in the 125 now. I also set up a way to fill the tanks easier now instead of hanging a hose outside my 2nd story window and into the basement. That was getting old quick. The siphoning effect was so strong that even with the faucet running full bore the hose would get squeezed flat. lol I tapped into the water line from the house and added a mixing valve, so hopefully the water comes out warm. It is adjustable, but only is listed down to 80 degrees. If need be, I can throttle down the hot water with another valve. Sweating pipe is harder than it looks, and with water already in the pipes, it was a disaster. All the welds I made with dry pipe were good, but tapping into the main water line was a mess, and I gave up and opted for the super expensive Sharkbite connectors in a few spots just so I didn't have to deal with leaks and the frustration of doing it all over again. Here are a few more pics:
