Legally yes, I am limited to FMJ's but I have only carried them on one deploymet and on others I used various other rounds. My main problem is the stopping power. Too many times I have seen over penetration and do not trust them. Like I said before, in my personal opinion and the opinion of many others I know, .45 and .40 cal is a much better round. That is why they are the predominat caliber carried by those of us that I know with CCP's and also police officers. This is also the reason that many police departments have now or are in the process of changing "Official"calibers.

isn't that a war crime to use any other round than FMJ?

honestly bro, get a big ass taser, they make'em to where u can shoot them and ur not looking at man slaughter, plus u dont have to worry about getting a carrying permit or license, or it going thru somebody... taser is the better option

aim for the balls

I would recommend a shotgun. It looks like you are looking only for home defense, not a personal carry permit. A shotgun will scare away anyone upon first glance, and if you actually do have to fire it at someone within indoor range, you are VERY likely to get some lead into him (use buck shot pellets as opposed to a slug).

I know you are worried about getting bullets into your tanks and whatnot, but if you actually have to fire your gun on someone, the tanks will be the least of your problems. *edit* just noticed you have a cobra....hmmmm. Put the cobra at the entrance you're having intruders enter at, or in the window. :)

No it is not a war crime to use rounds other than FMJ. That is a common misconception. There are many other rounds in usage by the US military (i.e. tracers, AP, API, frangibles, etc) and thats just with small caliber weapons.
I have a 9mm Browning Hi Power that I love but I agree though with some of the other posters that 9mm is not the best round for home defense. It has alot of penetration and other rounds have alot more stopping power. As a combat pistol I think the penetration has some positives, its one of the few rounds that will penetrate a car door for example. Home defense and combat are two entirely different scenarios however. Go with a larger caliber that has more stopping power, you want to drop the intruder with a single round, regardless of if he is dead or not. You dont need a high mag capacity, youre not getting in a shootout. For home defense I would recommend a shotgun or a .45 or .357. If you hit they will fall.
Im not one of those anti 9mm guys though. Ive hit people with 9mm. some have over penetrated some have not. Ive had lethal and non lethal effects on target, but then ive seen that with other weapons as well.

My biggest piece of advice to the OP is this:
Think long and hard about whether or not anything in your house is worth killing over. Dont buy a gun to scare an intruder or to make yourself feel better. You cannot un-kill someone.

Wouldn't they just steal your gun the next time you're out of town again? Wasn't that the purpose of breaking into your place in the first place? Words will get out you got a gun and they will just wait for you to go out of town next time.

You are in shock right now and need to cool your head first.

scorp i know you are anti-gun, but i appreciate the fact that you didnt just strait bash on guns/gun owners in your responce.

Oh, and Florida is a no register state. Long as you're over 21 and don't have any felonies just go buy a gun and it's legal for you to have granted you follow proper laws with your new fire arm. If you want a piece of mind get a bill of sale when you buy it, but that's about it.
