getting a snake

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Basically Kioka, he wants an active but not too active snake thats not too fat and doesnt get over 4'. And as its a first snake probably thats relatively easy to keep. Something that can live in a 4x1. And preferably a python as those are nice. :);)

Still too many out there. :p

Irian Jaya Carpet Python do nice in an arboreal setup and get used to handling quite easily, same with Jungle Carpet since they can be small depending on the bloodline; Children's and Spotted Python (although females can get to be 5') are readily available. Ball, Angolan (if you're rich enough to afford one) and Blood Pythons are nice and fat. There is the Bismark Ringed Python if you can get a male, but they are considered as "special needs" since they need a lot of ventilation and high humidity. A male Timor Python can be up for consideration as well.

There is the Savu Island Python that is quite nice looking and max out at around 4', but is pretty high-strung. A male Tanimbar Island Scrub Python (a female get to be 7' by the way) is also high strung, and stay on the small size. Green Tree Python is another high-strung snake that ususally stay around 3'-4', although they can get to be up to 7'.

I think I listed every python that have the potential to stay under 4'... When you get into boas, there are even more possibilities.

Edit: Don't flame me if you don't like the specimen listed... I didn't say I would recommend them, just presenting the choices.

Balls and Angolans just don't compare to bloods, man:p

I'd recommend not getting any Morelia other than an Irian Jaya carpet, esp. if you want to keep it in what sounds like a 55-gallon tank. I've never kept any of the scrubs, but I've heard they're all relatively nervous snakes, so you'd be better off not getting one as a first snake.

I suggest:
corn snake, ball python, kingsnake, spotted python

Just letting him know what choices he got for pythons... There are small JCPs, but I suspect their small size is because the bloodlines were tainted with IJCPs.

Some of the cage setups people keep Tanimbar Scrub in are messed up. Buuuuuuut I don't wanna get into that since those people don't think it's cruel and I do. :p

You are right though, he should avoid the second paragraph all-together if he doesn't want bad experiences with his first snake.

Don't really see why you posted the second paragraph altogether then Kioka..you didn't actually answer his question

Plus, everyone always seem to focus on the maximum size rather than focusing on the sexual dimorphism in snakes.

Sexual dimorphism is important in inquiring about a snake because, for example, while female ball pythons CAN acheive 5-6' in length (although they usually don't), males even more rarely surpass 4' in length and are get nowhere near the girth that females do.

I'm biased towards ball pythons, they are my favorite species, and with so many morphs to choose from, there's bound to be something for everyone.

Just a few of mine:

And that's nowhere near all of them...so like I said...there's got to be something for everyone as far as ball pythons go...

That spider...just stunning

Spiders are one of my top 5 favorites.

Good news with them too is that they are being produced in numbers such that they are becoming more affordable for everyone, not just other breeders. You can get them for under $500 shipped now in the US, slightly more in the UK and Europe.

The only Ball Pythons I liked so far are hybrids, Platinum and Lemon Blast. Hybrids rub me the wrong way though...

Since your still living with your parents, you need to listen to them. They are a very important part of your life right now. You said they don't like snakes. They never said you arn't aloud to have one. Ask your parents first, thats better then reaserch.

A male Ball Python only get 4 feet. A female can get about 5'. A 6 footer is rare and probably a very old snake.
