The back of my tank is painted black and I used black airline tubing so it's pretty much hidden in my tank. I only use to small airstones at each end of the tank. Sometimes I have a hard time keeping them covered. They seem to want to float. If they were black and not blue then sticking out of the sand a little bit wouldn't be a big deal.
Getting around bubbles in the tank

I happen to think bubbles placed in the right areas really adds to the aesthetics of a tank. and it seems that most of all the fish i have had seem to enjoy swimming thru them also. to each their own tho jus dont come down too hard on us tht are still using them. 
PS i use an HOB filter and leave the water level down 2". never seem to have an aration problem
