Dear Bill,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Service's procedures involving seized live wildlife. Our mission is, working with others, to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
Regulations found in 50 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 12 authorize the Service to take certain actions with respect to seized wildlife which has been forfeited or abandoned. Depending on the situation, the Service may return endangered species to the wild in their country of origin, transfer the animal to another government agency for official use or donate the animal to an appropriate scientific or educational institution. (See 50 CFR 12.30 to 12.39) In rare circumstances a seized animal may be destroyed if there is a significant disease or safety risk to humans or animal populations.
You also inquired about the process the Service uses to determine what species are proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act. For more information on this topic please visit the following link: http://www.fws.gov/endangered/bulletin/99/11-12/6-9.pdf
You can find the Endangered Species Act, 16 USC 1538 and 50 CFR Part 12 at http://www.gpoaccess.gov.
Thank you for your interest in our regulations that help protect fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats. Please feel free to respond to this message with any further inquiries that you may have regarding this matter.
kind of funny would be emailing any law enforcement with petty question..........you told us you hate law enforcement.
