Nightcrawlers is an excellent idea. Live ghost shrimp should work also.

I've only had 2 spiny eels over the years, but I've never had one, especially a small one, take live ghost shrimp

Mine only takes live ghost shimp. He's about 8 inches long now. he was a little over 5 when I got him a few months ago.

My 18" fire eel took two months to start eating. I tried everything (worms, shrimp, silversides, ect) and nothing. Then one day I was feeding shrimp and my ornate bichir was heading for the peice and the eel shot out of his pvc and sucked it up. He now eats everyday like a champ. Just took him quite awhile to start. He always looked healthy so I didn't worry some fish just take longer then others.

I just got my fire eel about a week ago and i saw him alot the first two days i put him in there... but now i havent seen him in a couple days and i am getting nervous. my tank is very well sealed. is this normal?? and he has not ate since i got him from what i can tell... is this also normal. this is my first eel

At the small size, I fed red wrigglers. They are a smaller earthworm that my little guys just loved. You find these at any bait shop and they are known to be one of the best composters so you shouldn't have any difficulty finding them. The smaller size meant no cutting up live creatures, and they stayed alive in the gravel. So, if the eel took a little bit to come eat it they would still be squirmy and interesting to them. Eventually, I got my guys to also take krill and cut up market shrimp.
