Everyone has diff opinions, I'm glad we didn't have to get into a heated battle. Each scenario is different. 
Getting gar off of live

I think hardest part is training the gar to eat from the bottom. Gars like to chill out on top and look for small fish.
As for how long they CAN starve, I have 2 Florida's. One took to the Silversides and Earthworms right away, but I figured he would, because he eats the algae wafers I throw in for the Silver Dollars. The other one only has one eye (got him that way) and he just never did take to non-live. He went five weeks. Yeah, five. And he still wouldn't eat. I'm guessing it has to do with his missing an eye... he can't trust us or something. I eventually had to go back to quarantined feeders, which still aren't safe, and, of course, the other one eats them too, because they're there. Oh well.
