Freeze dried food is really not right for gars -- if you want to get them on krill or shrimp, you need actual meat, not that weird powdered freeze dried stuff. Get frozen tilapia and they'll take it in a night.
I recently bought a 6" spotted gar and was told it would only take white bait. I dropped some Massivore pellets in when I added it to my tank and it ate them straight away, now he eats Carnivore floating sticks as well. Just depends on the fishes appitite.
