Personally I'd rather them go without eating that use an autofeeder. Granted I have no experience with auto feeders but what if something happens and the autofeeder malfunctions? If it were to mess up and dump more food than it's supposed to then no one will be there to take out the excess food and change the water.
I'm definitely not a fan of those feeder blocks either but I think I'd go with something like that for the baby fish instead of an auto feeder. At least that way you know exactly how much is going into the tank and there's no chance that a lot of excess could be dropped in to foul up the water even further.
