Getting my Black Arowana this week yahhhhh

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mike from exotic Aquaira Sent me the basket because that is how he raises them time and time again, Everyone one here says don't put them in a huge tank or big tank to help with feeding. Mike sent the basket with the fish to help with feeding, it is much easier this way. And as for stressed NO he is not stressed it is in a white container hence the coloration of him. Also he is eating like a little piggy 2 to 3 times a day as I was suggested from Mike. Once he gets a bit bigger than he will be intoduced to the tank.

ALso everyone on here says that baby Black Aro`s are not hardy they are likely to become ill and disease. ?

JayP. Enjoy the Black Arowana! Good to know that you are the first one in Halifax to have one!

Everyone on MFK loves to have a debate regarding water specs. Keep it simple. Clean / stable ph and that is all you need. The more people try to mess with water, the harder it is for the fish.

As far as why is he so white. Well it is because of the floating crate that he is kept in. He will darken once you let him out.

I keep smaller/more skittish/shy fish in floating baskets until they are larger because it is much easier to feed them. Those that are keeping baby arowanas in too big or too deep of a tank won't eat as well. Just form my personal experience raising countless aros. =)

See this is what Mike had to say earlier this week.

Ya it does look extremely stressed out. It looks good considering it got ship from one side of the country to the other.

JayP, put it in the tank ASAP. Baby aros are actually pretty "hardy" so you don't really need the basket and that stuff.

As you said it did just travel from Asia to British Colombia, to Halifax so that could be why he looks the way he does.

no everyone does not say that. I've raised several never had a problem with a baby black finding food, and they were all in 55g tanks. Personally IMO keeping it in a crate is just unneeded stress, which is obvious by the way it looks. Seroiusly, how much bigger does it need to be? What you think a 5" aro can find food in your tank yet at 3" it won't find the food :duh:

This is what your aro should look like

Well I am doing what my Vendor told me to do and so far so good, Mine still have all fins in great shape and barbels. Also eating like crazy and I can notice he is getting a little more darker and bigger. I am going to wait as directed by my vendor till he gets a bit bigger. And I just read another thread that did SAY not to put them in huge tanks it helps with feeding. Regardless I'm gonna try the crate for a while longer till he is a bit bigger. Everyone HAS THERE WAYS OF RAISING FISH AND DOING WHAT THEY DO WITH THERE TANKS, TOO MANY PEOPLE SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON CRITICIZING EVERYONE ELSE INSTEAD OF BEING HELPFUL AND THAT'S WHAT FORUMS ARE SPOUSE TO BE FOR (IMO)

we are trying to give you advice. Keeping it in a crate is not going to do it good what so ever. I have a .5 inch aro in a 20 gallon divided tank and it's doing great. i was originally very nervous in keeping a fish so small, but baby aros are pretty hardy.

Yes some are giving advice and I do appreciate positive feedback, although in this thread a VENDOR is the one who states that this is how he raises them all the time. As well I have spoke to a few other who deal with Aro`s and they have done the same and told me this is a common way to raise them when young.
Either way I'm fine with raising mine the way I was told.
Also Yesterday during a cleaning I released my Black into the 35 gallon and right away he started to turn black as in the vid above. I dont think that the container is added stress, I think that like most fish they lighten or darken according to their surroundings, same as Mike from Exotic said in this same thread.
Each person has their ways of raising fish I guess.

It seems to be a common misconception that small fish including aros can find food better in a small tank. I place my fish in th largest tank I have available and finding food is never an issue. Best of luck with your aro. I picked one up last week also and really enjoy him.

He does look a bit stressed, may also be getting white washed from being in an all white container. That being said if he is eating should be fine, he will probably jump out of that once he gets settled anyway.

Like i said earlier i got mine a few months ago , he was very small when i got him about 21/2 inches. went straight in my 40 breeder growout, no porblem finding food and has more than doubled in size. Also I ahve seen100s of them come straight out of columbia and they were still black even after that ordeal.
