Getting my Black Arowana this week yahhhhh

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He did not appear to have tethered fins way back in the thread when u first got him and they don't look to be improving in my eyes. He most likely got these tethered fins back when he was hiding in the plants when he was real young from the current and bubble wands that you've had with him throughout his life. Southamerican aros may not die in this setup but fin cosmetics will take a beatdown from a lifetime of bubblewands and excessive current. I would just calm the water a bit and limit the bubbles as much as possible to hopefully heal. I've seen this before with black aros especially. Very clean looking tank and scape though, gd luck

Now that he has been in the 200 Gallon for a few weeks I have noticed his fins get a bit better. But also when he was young he never had that full black colour as seen online and on here, but his colour is full and nice now and his fins seem to have gotten a bit fuller if you know what I mean. Would this mean that current in the tank is bad for Aro`s ?

I highly doubt current is the issue. My silvers lived in a 600 gallon with 2-4800gph pumps and an mp40w running full blast. I don't think you are even near that kind of flow. The owner of the tank before me kept a couple black aros with the same gph. The only time either of my aros had fins shredded like that was because of the occasional argument between them.

There now my tank and flow are set perfect for My Black Aro :)

Its fins are really bad. That's not normal, especially the tail fin, splitting in two? You should treat it before it gets worse. Are the other fish picking on it? For some reason, black aro fins and barbels are much harder to maintain than silvers, they rip easier and sometimes take a very long time to heal. Past a certain point and they may not heal at at (especially barbels). That's why a lot of older black arows don't look as good as they did when you first bought it. Beautiful fish but harder to maintain.

Fins are suppose to be clean like this:

I have owned 5 black arowanas in the past and currently have a 30ìnch male and the only reason the fins look like that on yours is due to harassement from other tankmates. It might have been left for too long now and you will have to trim all the fins so they grow back properly. I see the fins have been like that for a long time and that is definitley not normal for black arowanas.

I have spoke to my vendor and he is not alarmed by the fins. Yes they have been like that for a while now maybe from when it was younger or tank mates. Since I put him in the 200 gal his fins have started to get a bit better. What would you use to heal them. And really his fins are a bit tethered but his body is perfect and the way he swims and moves he is doing great. Other than that this was my first Aro. with that being said I got him at 2 inch and he is now 10 inch.
